How to Prevent Neck Pain While Sitting at Your Computer

One of the biggest culprits behind neck pain is something that many people spend hours every day doing—sitting at a computer desk. Because of this, people spend a lot of time in an unhealthy posture, which can lead to a host of aches and pains, including neck pain.

Whether you spend your time at a desk in the office or work from a computer desk at home, paying attention to ergonomics is key to keeping neck pain at bay. Reduce your risk of neck pain with this advice from Community Health and Wellness Center.

Put Your Computer at the Right Height

Any time your head is not in a neutral position—looking straight forward without tilting up or down—then you are using your cervical spine to move it. Now, imagine putting that strain on your spine for hours each day, which is what you are doing if your computer is not at the right height.

You should be able to look at your computer screen while holding your head in a neutral position to take the stress off of your neck. To get the right height, set the top of your screen at or just below eye level. If you can look at your entire screen without feeling the need to move your head, your computer is at the right height.

Get a Supportive Chair

A good computer desk chair lets you set the height of your seat so your knees are bent at 90 degrees and situates your forearms so they’re parallel to the floor when typing.  You should also be able to sit in your chair with your feet flat on the floor and your back against the back of the chair. The small of your back should be supported, either with cushioning from the chair or a small pillow. While you’re working, be mindful of maintaining this posture.
