Is Cold Laser Therapy Good for Arthritis?

Written By Community Health & Wellness Center on May 5, 2020

Cold Laser Therapy Arthritis treatment options range widely depending on where in the body your arthritis is located and the severity of the pain. While many people quickly turn to over the counter medications to mask the symptom of pain associated with their arthritis, many patients are looking into cold laser therapy as a new treatment option.

What is Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold laser therapy is a form of light therapy that is practiced by both medical doctors and Doctors of Chiropractic. Now, when most patients think of lasers as a treatment option, they often think of lasers that are used for surgical purposes.

It’s crucial to point out that there is a significant difference between the two types of lasers:

  • Cold Lasers: These are considered low-level lasers, and they utilize a class III laser. These lasers do not emit any heat at all and therefore do not cut the tissues of the body.
  • Warm/Hot Lasers: These are considered high-level lasers, and they utilize a class IV laser. While class IV lasers can be considered cold lasers, some class IV lasers do emit heat and are often used to precisely cut soft tissues during surgical procedures.

How is Cold Laser Therapy Used as an Arthritis Treatment?

Cold laser therapy is used as an arthritis treatment by triggering biochemical changes within the body’s cells. It does this by applying low-level light directly to a targeted area, such as the knee, hands or back. The body’s tissue then absorbs the red and near-infrared light, which causes a reaction that promotes a physiological response that promotes the regeneration of damaged cells.

Studies have shown that patients who utilize cold laser therapy have seen promising results. One study even stated that their patients suffering from Rheumatoid arthritis saw a reduction in pain by nearly 70%.
