Can Chiropractic Treatment Help Migraines?

Written By Community Chiropractic Center on September 10, 2020

rsz headache1As the 6th most disabling condition in the world, migraines can cause debilitating pain, nausea, and fatigue. Almost one in every four households include at least one person who suffers from migraines in America with sufferers reporting attacks up to 15 days each month. Many sufferers, particularly children, remain undiagnosed for long periods and therefore wait even longer to receive migraine treatment.

Many migraine sufferers rely on the use of medication to reduce symptoms during an attack but may struggle to prevent attacks from happening. Fortunately, chiropractic care offers a non-invasive migraine treatment option that doesn’t rely on the use of pain medication. Chiropractic migraine and headache treatment may include chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, or dietary or lifestyle changes.

What Are Migraines?

Migraines are a powerful headache that often inflict debilitating symptoms such as:

  • Pain that often starts as a dull ache, but grows into a more intense, throbbing pain
  • Sensitivity to smells, noise, or light
  • Nausea, upset stomach, and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness or blurred vision
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling very cold or warm

Once an attack begins, migraines typically last between four hours and three days. Some sufferers describe symptoms that signal when an attack is about to start, generally about an hour beforehand. These symptoms may include blurry vision, flashing dots or lights, or temporary vision loss.

In addition to chiropractic migraine treatment, patients may reduce the amount or intensity of migraines by avoiding migraine triggers. While each patient is different, common triggers include:

  • Stress
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Fatigue
  • Certain drinks or foods
  • Caffeine
  • Skipping meals
  • Exercise
  • Certain smells
  • Smoke
